The Week Ahead: Your Financial Road Map for May 1 to 5, 2006

Each of the upcoming financial items with the exception of Treasury auctions and announcements will be linked in this post as they become available. Housing market indicators will be featured on RealNews under the Housing Market category. Job market indicators wil be featured at Jobs Calling under the Job Market category. General US economic indicators will be featured on this site, Financial Options, under Economic Indicators category.

The earnings releases listed are companies I’ve chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason – I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.

Monday: Major U.S. Car companies will issue their April sales figures. The Bureau of Economic Analysis will release the Personal Income and Spending figures for March and the Commerce Department will release Construction Spending for March. The Institute for Supply Management (formerly the National Association of Purchasing Managers) Manufacturing Survey for April is scheduled for release.

Monday Treasury Schedule: 2-Year and 5-Year Note Settlement; 11 AM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Announcement; 1 PM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Auctions;

Monday Earnings: Chesapeake Energy Corp [Ticker: CHK ; Industry: Independent Oil & Gas] Chesapeake is an independent onshore domestic (US) oil and natural gas producer with a market cap over $11 billion), Dollar Financial Corp [Ticker: DLLR ; Industry: Credit Services ] Dollar is a provider of check cashing, payday loans, etc. It will be interesting to see whether high energy prices have impacted their business, either increasing volume or increasing defaults.

Tuesday: The National Association of Realtors will release the Pending Home Sales Index for March, providing a leading look at the state of the housing market following recent indications that the slowdown may be leveling off.

Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction

Tuesday Earnings: Archer Daniels Midland Co [Ticker: ADM ; Industry: Food - Major Diversified ] ADM is a large diversified agribusiness and food processor, with a market cap over $23 billion, Accredited Home Lenders Holding Co [Ticker: LEND ; Industry: Mortgage Investment ] Accredited is a mortgage banker and former (and possible future) client.

Wednesday: The Commerce Department will release data on Factory Orders for March, providing a look at the manufacturing economy. The Institute for Supply Management will provide a glimpse of the service economy with the Non-manufacturing Survey for August. The weekly look at the housing market from the Mortgage Bankers Association, the Mortgage Market Survey, provides information on the number of new home mortgage applications and the direction of mortgage rate movement. The Energy Department’s weekly petroleum data summary will be important this week with gas inventories dipping into the low-average range last week and refinery activity just picking up in advance of the Memorial Day Holiday and summer vacations. With the survey data, the Energy Information Administration also puts out This Week in Petroleum newsletter providing some analysis and insight on the numbers.

Wednesday Treasury Schedule: 9 AM Eastern 3-Year and 10-Year Note Announcements

Wednesday Earnings: Clear Channel Communications Inc [Ticker: CCU ; Industry: Broadcasting - Radio ] Clear Channel owns a large chain of radio stations including many talk radio stations and has a market cap of over $14 billion., Tidewater Inc [Ticker: TDW ; Industry: Shipping ] Tidewater specializes in providing supply vessels and other services for offshore energy producers.

Thursday: Job market watchers will get the Monster Employment Index for April and the weekly Jobless Claims from the Employment and Training Administration of the Labor Department. The Monster Index is “based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from more than 1,500 Web sites, including a variety of corporate career sites, job boards and Monster…[and] presents a snapshot of employer online recruitment activity nationwide.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release Productivity and Costs data for the first quarter of 2006. Chain, department, discount and retail stores typically report sales on the first Thursday of the month. Monetary policy and interest rate target announcements are scheduled from the Bank of England and the European Central Bank.

Thursday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Announcements; 3 PM Eastern Treasury STRIPS (Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal of Securities) report

Thursday Earnings: PMI Group Inc [Ticker: PMI ; Industry: Surety & Title Insurance ] PMI Group provides Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) and other insurances for the mortgage industry., Pennsylvania REIT [Ticker: PEI ; Industry: REIT - Retail ] PEI is a REIT specializing in malls and power and strip centers in the eastern United States .

Friday: The Labor Department will report on the Employment Situation for April and the Federal Reserve will issue its G.19 report on Consumer Credit for March and the first quarter.

Friday Treasury Schedule: None

Friday Earnings: SANOFI-AVENTIS [Ticker: SNY ; Industry: Drug Manufacturers - Other ] Sanofi-Aventis is a pharmaceutical and vaccine company that sold 1 billion doses of flu vaccine in 2004 and is working on an H5N1 bird flu vaccine., LoJack Corp [Ticker: LOJN ; Industry: Security & Protection Services ] LoJack provides products and services to help recover “mobile assets,” usually but not only cars. LoJack is to this industry what Xerox is to copy machines and Coke is to cola.
