Financial Roadmap: The Week Ahead February 23 to 27, 2009
The big economic news this week will be in the housing sector with reports on housing prices in major metropolitan areas Tuesday, existing home sales Wednesday and new home sales Thursday. Also Tuesday, the Conference Board will release the latest Consumer Confidence Index. With housing reports widely expected to bring more mixed news, a turnaround in consumer confidence could be best news of the week.
The weekly oil report should return to the spotlight as the tiny downward blip (200,000 barrels) in crude oil inventories in last week's report sparked a rebound in oil prices that moved crude futures back above the $40 mark. Though a drop of 15 to 20 million barrels is needed to put crude oil inventories back in a more normal range, there are plenty of loose dollars floating around looking for any cue to jump back in the oil market. Of course, a big drop in oil inventories and a spike in prices could quickly undue any positive impact of a potential improvement in consumer confidence.
