The Week Ahead: Your Financial Road Map for April 10-14, 2006
Each of the upcoming financial items with the exception of Treasury auctions and announcements will be linked in this post as they become available. Housing market indicators will be featured on RealNews under the Housing Market category. Job market indicators wil be featured at Jobs Calling under the Job Market category. International indicators will be featured at Growing Global under the Economic Indicators category. General US economic indicators will be featured on this site, Financial Options, under Economic Indicators category.
The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation†of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
The week starts off slow with no indicators scheduled for release Monday or Tuesday. The big day this week will be Wednesday, with two important weekly releases as well as the US International Trade figures for February and US Federal Budget figures for March.
Monday: No indicators are scheduled for release.
Monday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Announcement, 10 Year TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) Announcement, 1 PM Eastern 3-Month T-Bill Auction, 6-Month T-Bill Auction
Monday Earnings: ALCOA Inc [Ticker: AA ; Industy: Aluminum ] ALCOA is a company with a very long and interesting history including the court case that became perhaps the most important, or at least well known, precedent in antitrust law. Judge Learned Hand ordered the Alcoa of the day broken up into smaller companies because it was per se a monopoly, though it had committed no acts of unfair competition.
Tuesday: No indicators are schedule for release.
Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction
Tuesday Earnings: Genentech, Inc [Ticker: DNA; Industy: Biotechnology ]. Genentech is a 30-year old biotech company and in addition to the treatments it has produced, it's noteable for its ticker symbol and its website gene.com. ANGELICA CP [Ticker: AGL ; Industy: Business Services ] Angelica provides linen services for healthcare institutions in major cities, a part of the ever growing health care industry without some of the downsides of things like pharmaceuticals. An interesting niche worth watching.
Wednesday: The Bureau of Economic Analysis will report US International Trade for February and the Treasury Department will release the Federal Budget figures for March. The Mortgage Bankers Association will release the Weekly Mortgage Market Survey, which includes the numbers of new mortgage applications and a survey of average rates on new mortgages. The Energy Information Administration issues its weekly Petroleum Status Report and This Week in Petroleum newsletter.
Wednesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 10-year TIPS Auction
Wednesday Earnings: BANK OF THE OZARKS INC [Ticker: OZRK ; Industy: Regional - Southeast Banks ]. A regional bank in my area, headquarted in Little Rock, Arkansas. Circuit City [Ticker: CC ; Industy: Electronics Stores ]. Harley-Davidson [Ticker: HDI ; Industy: Recreational Vehicles ] This company nearly died because of poor products and foreign competition, but has staged an incredible comeback based on a huge improvement in craftsmanship. Harley could be the model for other struggling US industries. Bill Ford should be studying the Harley-Davidson story.
Thursday: From the Labor Department, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Import/Export Prices for March and Employment and Training Administration will issue the weekly Jobless Claims Report. The Commerce Department will report on March Retail Sales and Manufacturing Sales and Business Inventories for February. The University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center will issue its consumer sentiment survey of 500 families for March.
Thursday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 3-Month T-bill Announcement, 6-Month T-bill Announcement
Thursday Earnings: M G I C INVEST CP [Ticker: MTG ; Industy: Surety & Title Insurance ]. MGIC is a provider of Private Mortgage Insurance, which protects lenders on defaulted mortgages with less than 20% down payment. This is one of the first places I'd expect to see signs that there is serious trouble in the housing market. TRIBUNE CO [Ticker: TRB ; Industy: Publishing - Newspapers].
Friday: The week wraps up with the Federal Reserve's G.17 release on Industrial Production and Capacity Utilitization.
Friday Treasury Schedule: None
Friday Earnings: Knight Ridder [Ticker: KRI ; Industy: Publishing - Newspapers]
