The Week Ahead: Your Financial Road Map for June 12 to 16, 2006

Each of the upcoming economic indicators will be linked in this post as they become available. See more general information at the end of this post to help you follow these releases as they come out through the week.

Monday: The US Treasury Department will report on the federal budget for May. [Warning pro-capitalism politics in this post.] Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak at the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Monday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 4-Week Bill Announcement; 1 PM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Auctions

Monday Earnings: Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc [Ticker: LEH ; Industry: Investment Brokerage - National]

Tuesday: The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Producer Price Index (PPI) for May [info about the PPI]. The Commerce Department will issue reports on Retail Sales for May and Business Inventories for April. Temp agency Manpower will report the results of its survey of employer hiring plans for the third quarter. Internationally, The Conference Board will report on leading and coincident indicators for Korea and the ZEW will release its Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany.

Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction

Tuesday Earnings: BEST BUY CO INC [Ticker: BBY ; Industry: Electronics Stores], GOLDMAN SACHS GRP [Ticker: GS ; Industry: Investment Brokerage ‫ National] A worse than expected earnings performance from Goldman Sachs could have wider consequences as outgoing CEO Henry Paulson has been nominated to be the new US Treasury Secretary.

Wednesday: The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) for May [info about the CPI] and real earnings for May. The Census Bureau will release its quarterly services report for the first quarter. The Federal Reserve will release its Beige Book. The Mortgage Bankers Association weekly Mortgage Market Survey will be released with information on current interest rates and the number of new mortgage applications. The Department of Energy's weekly petroleum status summary and This Week in Petroleum newsletter are due out Wednesday.

Wednesday Treasury Schedule: No announcements or auctions scheduled

Wednesday Earnings: ATARI INC [Ticker: ATAR ; Industry: Multimedia & Graphics Software ]

Thursday: The Conference Board will provide data on coincident and leading economic indexes for the United Kingdom. The Federal Reserve will issue its G.17 report on Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization for May and the New York Federal Reserve will release its Empire State Manufacturing Survey for June. The Labor Department's weekly Jobless Claims report is scheduled for normal Thursday release [info on Jobless Claims].

Thursday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Announcements

Thursday Earnings: Bear Stearns Companies Inc [Ticker: BSC ; Industry: Investment Brokerage ‫ National] Bear Stearns mortgage affiliate is a former client.

Friday: Friday is triple witching day, when stock index futures, stock index options and stock options all expire creating a potential for a very volatile final hour of trading . Friday is international trade day again this week as the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports on the US Current Account for the first quarter. The University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center consumer sentiment survey is scheduled for Friday release.

Friday Earnings: WINNEBAGO IND INC [Ticker: WGO ; Industry: Recreational Vehicles]

The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
