The Week Ahead: Your Financial Road Map for June 19-23, 2006

Each of the upcoming economic indicators will be linked in this post as they become available. See more general information at the end of this post to help you follow these releases as they come out through the week.

This week will be full of information on the state of the international economy with the Conference Board releasing indexes of leading and coincident economic indicators for four countries including the United States. Leading indicators are those economic indicators which tend to move ahead of the broader economy and are useful for forecasting. Coincident indicators are the economic indicators which move with the general economy and help to measure current economic activity. Also this week we'll get two monthly indicators and one weekly indicator on the housing market.

Monday: The week opens with indexes of leading and coincident indicators for France from the Conference Board. Also Monday we'll get a glimpse of the housing market with the National Association of Home Builders ‫ Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, which gauges the sentiment of home builders.

Monday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern Time 4-Week T-Bill Announcement; 1 PM 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Auction

Monday Earnings: Circuit City Stores Inc [Ticker: CC ; Industry: Electronics Stores ]

Tuesday: The Conference Board will release indexes of leading and coincident indicators for Mexico. The Commerce Department will put concrete numbers to builder sentiment with the report on housing starts for May. State Street Associates will release the State Street Investor Confidence Index, which measures investor sentiment by analyzing the risk level of actual investment portfolios.

Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction

Tuesday Earnings: Sonic Corp [Ticker: SONC ; Industry: Restaurants ], JM Smucker Co [Ticker: SJM; Industry: Processed & Packaged Goods ]

Wednesday: The Conference Board will release leading and coincident indicator indexes for Spain. The Mortgage Bankers Association will provide our weekly glimpse of the housing and mortgage markets with the weekly Mortgage Market Survey, which includes information on the number of new mortgage applications as well as mortgage rates. The Energy Department will issue the weekly petroleum status report.

Wednesday Treasury Schedule: No announcements or auctions scheduled.

Wednesday Earnings: Bed Bath and Beyond Inc [Ticker: BBBY ; Industry: Home Furnishing Stores], FedEx Corporation [Ticker: FDX ; Industry: Air Delivery & Freight Services ]

Thursday: The US leading indicator index (plus lagging and coincident indicators) will be released by the Conference Board for May. The Labor Department will issue its weekly Jobless Claims report. [Info on Jobless Claims reports.]

Thursday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Announcements, 2-Year and 5-Year Note Announcements

Thursday Earnings: Family Dollar Stores Inc [Ticker: FDO ; Industry: Discount, Variety Stores ], Oracle Corp [Ticker: ORCL ; Industry: Application Software ]

Friday: Friday will be a slow day with only Durable Goods Orders for May from the Commerce Department.

Friday Treasury Schedule: No announcements or auctions scheduled.

Friday Earnings: Nothing of interest yet announced.

The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
