The Week Ahead: Your Financial Roadmap for August 14 to 18, 2006

Each of the upcoming economic indicators will be linked in this post as they become available. See more general information at the end of this post to help you follow these releases as they come out through the week.

This will be the big week of the month with economic indicators in the housing market (3), international economy (3), inflation figures (2) and the US Leading Index from the Conference Board.

Note release on Tuesday not included in initial post.

Monday: The Conference Board will release the indexes of leading and coincident economic indicators for the United Kingdom. [Leading down 0.1%; Coincident up 0.1%]

Monday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction; 1 PM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Auction

Monday Earnings: READY MIX INC [Ticker: RMX ; Industry: Cement ]

Tuesday: The New York Federal Reserve Bank will release the Empire State Manufacturing Index for July. [Index 10.3]The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Producer Price Index for July. [Finished Goods Up 0.1%; Core rate down 0.3%] The Treasury Department will report on International Capital flows for July. [$75.1 billion] Those interested in the housing market will want to watch the National Association of Home Builders ‫ Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. [Down 17.9%] The Conference Board released the July results of its Help-Wanted Online Data Series showing a decrease of 4%.

Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Auction

Tuesday Earnings: HOME DEPOT INC [Ticker: HD ; Industry: Home Improvement Stores ], ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH [Ticker: ANF ; Industry: Apparel Stores ]

Wednesday: The Conference Board will release the indexes of leading and coincident indicators for Korea. [Leading up 0.8%; Coincident up 0.4%] Two housing market indicators come out today with the Housing Starts for July from the Commerce Department and the Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey from the Mortgage Bankers Association. [Housing Starts Down 2.5%; Purchase Applications Down 0.8%; Rates increased] The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Consumer Price Index for July and the Federal Reserve will release its G.17 release on Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization. [CPI-U up 0.3%; Industrial Production Up 0.4%; Capacity Utilization at 82.4%] The Energy Information Administration will release its weekly petroleum data summary and This Week in Petroleum analysis newsletter. [Crude, gasoline inventories fall, total petroleum inventories rise]

Wednesday Treasury Schedule: No auctions or announcements scheduled.

Wednesday Earnings: BIG LOTS INC [Ticker: BLI ; Industry: Discount, Variety Stores ]

Thursday: The Conference Board will release indexes of leading, coincident and lagging economic indicators for the United States. The Employment and Training Administration will release the weekly Jobless Claims report. [Leading index down 0.1%; Coincident index up 0.1%; Jobless Claims down 10,000]

Thursday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Announcements

Thursday Earnings: BARNES AND NOBLE [Ticker: BKS ; Industry: Specialty Retail, Other ], SHOE CARNIVAL INC [Ticker: SCVL ; Industry: Apparel Stores ]

Friday: The Consumer Sentiment survey from the University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center is due out today.

Friday Treasury Schedule: No auctions or announcements scheduled.

Friday Earnings: FOOT LOCKER INC [Ticker: FL ; Industry: Apparel Stores ], JM Smucker Co [Ticker: SJM ; Industry: Processed & Packaged Goods ]

The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
