The Week Ahead: Your Financial Roadmap for August 28 to September 1, 2006

Each of the upcoming economic indicators will be linked in this post as they become available. See more general information at the end of this post to help you follow these releases as they come out through the week.

This week will be important for monetary policy and interest rate news as the Fed releases the minutes of the last Federal Open Market Committee Meeting and the European Central Bank announces the results of its second monetary policy meeting of the month. It's also a big week for job market news with the monthly Employment Situation report, the ADP Employment Report, the Monster Job Index and the Conference Board's Help Wanted Index as well as the usual weekly jobless claims report. Plus reports on manufacturing, housing and construction.

Monday: The Conference Board will release indexes of leading and coincident economic indicators for Australia. [Leading Up 0.4%; Coincident Up 0.2%]

Monday Treasury Schedule: 11 AM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill Announcement; 1 PM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Auctions.

Monday Earnings: China Petroleum and Chemical Corp [Ticker: SNP ; Industry: Independent Oil & Gas ]

Tuesday: The Conference Board will issue its Consumer Confidence Index for August. [CCI 99.6; down 6.9%] The Federal Reserve will release the minutes of the August 2006 Federal Open Market Committee meeting, when the FOMC voted to end its historic string of rate increases.

Tuesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 4-Week T-Bill and 2-Year Note Auctions.

Tuesday Earnings: NOVELL INC [Ticker: NOVL ; Industry: Application Software ], BAYER AKTIENGES ADS [Ticker: BAY ; Industry: Drug Manufacturers - Other ]

Wednesday: Automatic Data Processing, Inc. will release its ADP Employment Report for August. [107,000 jobs added] The Commerce Department will release preliminary GDP and Corporate Profit figures for the second quarter of 2006. [GDP-growth revised upward to 2.9%] The Mortgage Bankers Association's Weekly Mortgage Market Survey will be worth a close eye the next couple of months as both new home sales and existing home sales have declined substantially. [Purchase Applications Down 1.6%] The Energy Information Administration will release its weekly petroleum data summary and This Week in Petroleum newsletter. [Crude inventories up 2.4 million barrels; Refineries at 92.9%]

Wednesday Treasury Schedule: 1 PM Eastern 5-Year Note Auction

Wednesday Earnings: GRUBB [Ticker: GBE ; Industry: Property Management ], SIGNET GRP PLC ADR [Ticker: SIG ; Industry: Jewelry Stores ]

Thursday: Three job market indicators out today: The Conference Board's Help Wanted Index, the Monster Employment Index and the weekly Jobless Claims report. [Help Wanted Index Down 5.8%; Jobless Claims Down 2,000; Monster Employment Index Up 4.8%] The European Central Bank will announce the decision of its second monetary policy meeting of the month. [No change] The Commerce Department will report on Personal Income and Spending and on Factory Orders both for July. [Personal Income Up 0.5%; Personal Spending Up 0.8%; Factory Orders Down 0.6%]

Thursday Treasury Schedule: 2-Year and 5-Year Note Settlement; 11 AM Eastern 3-Month and 6-Month T-Bill Announcements

Thursday Earnings: Dollar General Corp [Ticker: DG ; Industry: Discount, Variety Stores ], TIFFANY AND CO [Ticker: TIF ; Industry: Jewelry Stores ]

Friday: The Labor Department will release the Employment Situation report for August. [128,000 new jobs; unemployment 4.7%] The Michigan Consumer Survey Center is scheduled to report on Consumer Sentiment. The Commerce Department will release Construction Spending figures for July and the National Association of Realtors will release its Pending Home Sales Index for July. [Pending Home Sales Down 7%] The Institute for Supply Management (formerly the National Association of Purchasing Managers) will release its Manufacturing Report on Business which includes the Purchasing Managers Index. [PMI 54.5] Major US automakers typically report previous month's sales on the first business day of the month.

Friday Treasury Schedule: None scheduled.

Friday Earnings: VIMPEL COMMUN [Ticker: VIP ; Industry: Wireless Communications ] Provides wireless communication services in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. $10 billion plus market cap as of Friday.

The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
