Financial Roadmap February 26 March 2, 2007

The big news this week will come from the housing market as the National Association of Realtors releases January existing home sales on Tuesday and the Commerce Department follows with new home sales on Wednesday. A big drop in sales would shake the notion that the housing market has stabilized, while a big rise in sales could lead to speculation about further Fed rate hikes. Barring a big move in the actual direction of sales, the important thing to watch will be the size of the inventory of listed homes expressed as a number of months sales. A big inventory glut could hurt housing prices, and along with it consumer confidence and spending, even if unit sales remain stable.

An interesting earnings story will be out early in the week as the soon to be merged XM and Sirius satellite radio companies report (on Monday and Tuesday respectively). The big question investors don't seem to be asking, as EPS estimates are a 71 cent/share loss for XM and 19 cent/share loss for Sirius, is how negative 71 cents plus negative 19 cents comes out to a positive earnings outlook.

The earnings releases listed are companies I've chosen because of their industries, because of market capitalization (the size of the company), because they have local plants in my area or for various other reasons of general interest. Please do not take these as a “recommendation” of any sort. That I list them here simply means that I think the results may be interesting for any number of reason - I may occasionally even choose companies where I expect negative results.
