Financial Roadmap for March 26 to 30, 2007
The big news for investors this week will be Monday's report on new home sales from the Commerce Department and Friday's construction spending report. The housing market is showing great signs of stabilizing, but the picture is nothing if not muddled. Last week's report on existing home sales showed a 3-year high in month-to-month sales growth, but median prices were still down year-over-year and inventory levels still topped a six-month supply. The new home market is even more befuddled with builder confidence down more than seven percent but builders still plugging ahead to push housing starts up 9%. If new home sales don't improve more than the increase in housing starts, a new home inventory glut could give those builders reason for their pessimism. Housing market watchers, as well as other investors, will also want to pay attention to the Consumer Confidence Index due out Tuesday from the Conference Board ‫ with gas prices on the increase again just in time for the spring buying season, anyone concerned with consumer spending needs to watch this number.
Later in the week, we'll see reports on personal income and spending and durable goods orders plus the final revisions for 4th Quarter GDP and Corporate Profits.
